Whats the purpose of a Garter at weddings?
Im going to a wedding this afternoon, and I was shopping with the bride for white and blue garters. I know they hold up stockings, but whats the tradition
The garter tradition started in the 14th century in Europe. Wedding guests believed that it was good luck to have pieces of the brides dress, much to the chagrin of the bride. So the brides began to throw miscellaneous items with the garter being one of them. In other words it's to keep people from destroying your dress. Never was it to actually hold up stockings and such.
